Exports and Customs

India is one of Germany’s most important trading partners. When it comes to exporting goods, there are a multitude of regulations that must be observed.

Customs

In addition to understanding the applicable customs tariffs and regulations governing the import of goods to India (Negative List of Imports), you will need to comply with a series of general rules for exporting goods to India. You can find further information on the latest import regulations here (German only).

Certification

In order to export certain products to India, manufacturers often require certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This certification requirement applies to a growing number of products. Starting on 28 August 2025, for instance, a large number of machines and electrical systems will be subject to certification requirements. In our overview of BIS certifications (German only), we have collated all the relevant information for you, alongside a number of helpful links.

Current trade policies

Negotiations on a free trade agreement between the EU and India have been ongoing since 2007; after a hiatus of several years, the process resumed in June 2022. Negotiations are expected to conclude by late 2025. If the free trade agreement enters into force, it would significantly improve German companies’ access to the Indian market and facilitate Indian investment in Germany. Consequently, the Düsseldorf Chamber of Industry and Commerce is advocating for a rapid and successful conclusion to the negotiations. You can find further information here (German only).
