Law and Tax
The legal system in India has its roots in common law. It is complex and multifaceted.
Law
Civil and commercial law is based on English codifications. The legal language is English; the lower courts also use the language of the respective state.
The publication Recht kompakt (‘Law in brief’, German only) from GTAI provides a brief overview of the most important aspects of Indian law, such as sales law, warranties, securities and industrial property rights.
Tax
Indian tax law is extremely complex. The issue of tax withholding, in particular, raises quite a few questions, most of which are related to the tax residency certificate (TRC) or Form 10F. Information about tax withholding in India, as well as helpful information on submitting Form 10F, can be found here (German only).
Current entry requirements
German citizens need a visa to enter India. They must apply for a visa before entering the country, either at an Indian diplomatic mission or online (e-visa). A current overview of the various types of visas and the requirements for each of them can be found on the website of the Indian Embassy in Berlin.
There are currently seven e-visa categories, although the e-business visa is most relevant to business travellers. You can apply for a visa and pay the fees online via the following link: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html
The Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) has put together a fact sheet on applying for an e-visa; you can access it via this link (German only).
The German Federal Foreign Office updates its travel and safety advisories for India (German only) regularly.
